Disaster Services The American Red Cross responds to over 70,000 disasters annually, providing food, clothing, and shelter to people who have been affected by floods, fires, hurricanes, and other natural disasters. Some of these make national news, but the many that don't are still devastating for the families that are affected. In Sierra and Western Nevada County, trained, local disaster volunteers are available 24 hours, 7 days per week to provide disaster relief when needed, either next door or across the country. When not involved in disaster operations, volunteers work on helping all county residents prepare for the next big fire or flood.
